KANTIVA Bioenergy Research Centre is based at the Kuopio campus of the University of Eastern Finland (UEF). The founding members of the research centre are the University of Kuopio (now part of UEF), National Institute for Health and Welfare, Finnish Meteorological Institute and Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.
KANTIVA focuses on multidisciplinary, national and international R&D projects on the effects of production and use of bioenergy. The centre builds on the strong, internationally recognised expertise of the research organisations located on the campus area, and on a close collaboration with the UEF Joensuu campus. KANTIVA is also supported by bioenergy related enterprises operating in Eastern Finland.
Objectives of the research centre are to:
-
carry out R&D projects on the effects of production and use of bioenergy
-
work towards an independent, scientific basis for future decisions concerning bioenergy
-
promote sustainable utilisation of different forms of biomass for energy production
-
build new local, regional and international scienfific collaboration, and reinforce the existing links to leading bioenergy research groups
Examples of the research topics:
-
environmental effects of the production of biomasses for energy production
-
logistics of biomasses
-
combustion processes and emission control
-
environmental effects of energy production from biomasses, e.g. effects on the climate
-
health and occupational risks
-
comprehensive optimisation of bioenergy production and utilisation
